Catmaze is a fairy metroidvania inspired by Slavic myths that was developed by Redblack Spade. It was made available on Steam on the 24th of May 2018, but it got published by Ratalaika Games for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles on the 9th of September 2022.
In Catmaze you will control Alesta, a sorceress in search of the lost road to Nav, the world of the dead. You will be traversing through portrayals of ancient tales through a large open labyrinth of Slavic villages and old dark forests.
Alesta will have help in her battles with dangerous mythical creatures from the summoned creatures – familiars. You will be able to choose from a handful of them, each with their unique abilities. Various characters await you on your path and their destinies will be in your hands. There are many side quests available in the game and the completion of them will determine how your adventure will end.
Being a metroidvania title, you will be allowed to backtrack your journey and finding new secret ways in the levels, and to acquire new skills that were not available from the beginning. You are only able to save the game in certain places, which represents the danger of the adventure.
Boss battles also await you and they represent entities from Slavic tales, while presenting their unique history. As you will be progressing through the story, which is told through cut-scenes, the game will also get more and more difficult.
As far as the game’s graphics go, they are pretty beautiful with their pixelized styling, there are plenty of details that stand out, and the animations of the characters are swell as well. The game falls short with lack of appropriate sound effects, while the soundtrack is very good and fitting for this kind of a game. The biggest pro of Catmaze is its colossal open world that is ready for your exploring. The storytelling also excels thanks to the interesting Slavic fables.
Catmaze is available for purchase on Steam or the PlayStation Store, and it will cost you 9,99 EUR in both digital stores.
